Examining Alkaline Voltage Boosters

Are you looking for new ways to get more power out of your alkaline batteries? Military Technology might have some good news for you. A recent article in Military Technology titled "COMPANY EXTENDS ALKALINE BATTERY LIFE WITH VOLTAGE BOOSTER” discusses this.

The author of the piece writes, "Batteroo is a Silicon Valley company preparing to release its Batteriser product in September. The Batteriser is a small sleeve that fits around alkaline batteries to boost the voltage to 1.5V. This means that batteries that would otherwise be thrown into the trash when the voltage dips to 1.3V or 1.4V could be used until the unboosted voltage reaches 0.6V, extending the useful life of a battery 8x, according to the company. This product has the potential to reduce the number of batteries in landfills as well as increasing the time between replacing batteries. The expected price of the sleeve is $10 for a pack of 4 sleeves.”

Meanwhile, another battery life extending gadget claims to boost battery life 800%. Boing Boing reports on this in a recent article titled "Can a $2.50 gadget extend alkaline battery life by 800%?” Rob Beschizza of Boing Boing writes, "It Betteridge! Jon Phillips reports on the Batteriser, a metal sleeve promising ‘up to’ 8X more life from disposable batteries. It’s essentially a voltage booster that sucks every last drop of useable energy from ostensibly spent batteries. So, instead of using just 20 percent of all the power hidden inside of your Duracells and Energizers, Batteriser makes effective use of the remaining 80 percent. Voltage boosters are nothing new, but Batteriser scales down the technology to the point where it can fit inside a stainless steel sleeve less than 0.1 mm thick. Roohparvar says the sleeves are thin enough to fit inside almost every battery compartment imaginable, and the combined package can extend battery life between 4.9x for devices like remote controls and 9.1x for various electronic toys.”

Lately, I have been fortunate euognh to stumble on twenty-packs of AAs for about what you'd normally pay for about eight batteries. They're Energizers not Duracells but roughly equivalent, I'm sure.

(Electronics) I ordered the Sony CR2032 Lithium 3V Batteries (2 x Pack of 5) and recvieed them promptly from Photoland NY for $5.99. They were exactly as advertised: a total of 10 Sony CR2032 Lithium batteries in 2 blister packs of 5 each. The use by date was blank as other reviewers have noted and there was no copyright date on the packaging. The batteries had 16 stamped on the back, but not sure if this is a date code of some type or not. I tested 4 of the cells under a small load, 2 from each pack and they ranged from 3.28 to 3.27 Volts, so it seems they are within specs, about 2% discharge versus a brand new 3.35 Volt battery. However, the batteries I was replacing them with were only down to 2.8 Volts but no longer powered my tire pressure gauge. So given that the lowest usable voltage in my application is 2.8 Volts, approximately 15% of the batteries' life was already used. For comparison locally purchased CR2032 batteries would be significantly more expensive, at least 4x the cost. Overall they are a good deal for the price, but not the freshest batteries.
