Is it Time for Repair or Time for Replacement?

September 18 2015

As the world becomes more technologically dependent we all have more and more electronics in our lives – which leads to more and more devices in our lives that could potentially have problems!

Is the fix simpler than you imagine?

It’s not uncommon for people to assume their electronics are broken when in fact there’s a much simpler solution. For example, have you checked the batteries in your device? Many people believe that certain electronics don’t need to have their batteries replaced – especially if they’re rechargeable – but this isn’t true. Some common devices that people don’t realize need battery replacements include:

If you own one of these devices and they suddenly stopped working – seemingly for no reason – the fix really could be as simple as replacing the battery. Battery Bob has every type of batter you can imagine and looks forward to helping you find the right solution.

Is it more expensive to fix than to buy a new one?

Once you’ve established that no quick fixes are available, this is really the key consideration: will it cost more to fix it than it would to buy a new one? It used to be that fixing a TV was much more affordable than buying a new one, but depending on what the issue is with your electronics, the fix could be incredibly costly. This is due to a number of factors, including a lack of qualified repair people and the fact that replacement parts can be very expensive to begin with.

Is a new version about to be released?

You also need to consider how much longer you’ll be using the device in question. For example, if the screen broke on your smartphone, but you know you want the newest version that just came out, or one that’s just about to come out, then it’s likely not worth repairing your phone just to use it for a few weeks.

How important is the environmental impact to you?

Many electronics can be recycled but some can’t. As you consider if it’s time to replace or repair an item, think about how important the environmental aspect is to you. Remember that part of the green equation "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” is reduce – which refers to reducing the amount of waste we each create. You may want to have your electronics repaired to use them as long as possible, thus cutting down on the amount of waste you’re contributing.
